A live-album is always something I like, especially when it’s good record and that’s for sure the case with this album. Under the Sun is a progrock quartet from LA that reminds me a bit of Pendragon, Kansas, Jadis and more of those bands. In 2000 their debut album ‘Under The Sun’ came out through Magna Carta Records, an album which they produced themselves, but was mixed by Terry Brown, known for his work with Rush. That record did receive great reviews and was even hailed as Record of the Year in the Netherlands. After that they went on the road to do a lot of live-shows in America and in Canada. Everywhere they came they’re welcomed by an enthusiastic audience. And after hearing this live-album, I’m not surprised at all, this is progrock from a very high level performed by very skilled musicians. This live-CD has been recorded during their performance at the yearly held Nearfest Music Festival in Bethlehem/Pennsylvania and it has been mixed by Brad Aaron, known from his work with Kansas. It’s recorded differently then most live CDs that are putting you in the crowd, away from the stage. With this CD you have the feeling you’re on stage with the band and there’s a bit more stereo detail on it. You get to hear most of the songs from the ‘Under The Sun’ album(at least as far as I know because I don’t have that album) and also a previously-unreleased track called "Souljourner", a very epic song, but just wonderful. The live-playing from this band is very tight and the vocals are clear and true, while the songs are pretty diverse and create an atmosphere that you may expect from a progrock-band. But nowhere I did got bored, which can happen sometimes when you listen to progrock music because they make a lot of long songs, so that’s a positive point regarding the song-arrangements. If you’re a fan of the before mentioned bands, Under the Sun is also your package, so get it!!! Also scheduled for this year is a new and second studio-album.
