With a delay of an hour Pantheist entered the stage at 8 PM. Their
nihilistic funeral doom again went to the bone. Dejection got
control over the frontline by the desolate tones produced the
mournfully musicians. Musically the band excelled with great
songs as "O Solitude" and "Envy
us", only the vocals were not that convincing tonight.
Still a worthy opening of this doom festivity.
Second band this night were
the Belgian veterans in the art of doom/death Insanity Reigns
Supreme. They came as
a bombshell and got control over mind and body. The music was
rich, heavy and full of emotion. The guitars wept, the bass was
sad, the drums were anxiously and the vocals were harrowing. The
stage act was frugal and drowned in melancholia. The set list was
short, still mouth-watering including a new song from their
upcoming 2nd album in December. With the beautiful "La
Tristesse Eternelle" the end of their appearance came
too soon.
Next one on the bill were the
overjoyed Rotturdoom-stars of Officium Triste. From the first 'till the last tones this
band gave the best they've got. Powerful dejected guitars; strong
emotional, but sometimes groovin' bass, depressive drums and deep
grunts mixed with forced clean vocals. The needed keys were not
live, but still gave the songs that extra dimension. Their set
list became one big highlight with smashing beauties as "Roses
on my Grave"; "Pathway (of broken glass)" a
surprisingly great sung "Camouflage" (the
recommended earplugs could stay out) and the intergalactic
anaesthetic "Stardust".
After the last song "This
is Goodbye" the audience kept yelling for an encore,
which they got in the Chorus of Ruin-cover "Headstone".
This was the best Officium Triste gig I've ever
experienced.
The night became darker and
colder, the ideal circumstances for the Portuguese Desire to enter the stage. The playing of their
morbid shivering epic compositions went to the bone. The stage
act was miraculous and full of pessimism all performed with
complete abandonment. The tortuous and melancholic vocals became
the guidance through their dark atmospheric world created by the
glorious and grief use of the guitars, bass, drums and keys. Most
of the songs came from their latest black mass "Locus
Horrendus
" completed with some old ones and a
superb version of the Candlemass cover "Solitude",
with guest vocals from the frontmen of Officium Triste and
Evoken. After their regular set they were yelled back for a
well-deserved encore. My personal highlight of the day.
Time for the Americans of Evoken to end the night in style. The people who
already left, because of the late hour were totally wrong. Evoken
became the desert of the evening, the final touch on the already
impressive night. They paraded their extreme grimly vast doom
with an ultra heavy sound. The tired audience drew strength out
of the massive rhythms to thereupon got swallowed by the high
intensity of the solemn sonic waves. The combination of stage
act, lights, smoke and sound was murderous. The audience really
enjoyed themselves immensely. Without any doubt the crowning
glory of the night!
